Her poem, “Justice,” was inspired by Tracy K. Smith’s poem, “Declaration,” from her book Wade in the Water.

Justice

By Mary Abuamsha

All men are created equal.

While evils are sufferable,

he refused to assent.

Murders they commit

destroyed our people.

Executioners by their hands.

The voice of justice

solemnly publish and declare.

Totally dissolved peace and honor.

Absolute Tyranny.

Depriving us.

Barbarous.

Unworthy of a civilized nation.

Excited to bring destruction

of a Tyrant

unfit to be a ruler of a free people.
